Investigators said a 2024 Ram tow truck was traveling west along U.S. 64 when it crossed the center line and entered the path of oncoming traffic. The truck subsequently collided head-on with a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The collision resulted in a devastating fire, and the Ram became fully engulfed in flames with Boyette trapped inside. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Boyette sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the location of the crash.

The Freightliner was driven by 56-year-old Crystal Sue Austin of Lenoir, who suffered serious injuries in the collision. She was airlifted to CMC Main for medical treatment.
